Azerbaijan and Slovenia as seen by Keith

Posted on 2008.05.15 at 16:45

Azerbaijan has given a new dimension to the phrase “over the top”. One of the few lines that you can make out in this awfully pronounced English is “save us from all this” and never has a line been so appropriate. Again the backdrop is the only think that’s working in the performance, as the camera work is awful and there’s so much going on on stage that you can’t distinguish anything from a mixture of pyrotechnics and quasi operatic screaming. Sadly this is likely to qualify because of the Turkish and Azeri diaspora, but it certainly needs a lot of work by the delegation to make it look good on screen.

Slovenia was the song that needed most improvement after the first rehearsals and I’m afraid that while it’s better today, it’s still a long way from a finished product. Rebeka looked far from comfortable on several run-throughs and vocally she was still shaky. Her two dancers now resemble space age couriers and the routine is too contrived for its own good. I don’t think the songs needs half the fluff that’s on screen and right now I think this is struggling to qualify.

I´m not surprised

Here we go again: Keith sees nothing but disaster. Expects nothing, but the worse. From Azerbaijan, of course. Oh God, what a HUGE dispora this little unknown country has! Wow, you see, since I´m going to vote for Azerbaijan, I must be a dispora member, too. Unbelievable.

Re: I´m not surprised

That song is a nightmare! full stop! This semi final is full of them. Doesnt take alot to see even Ireland have a catchier song than alot of theses acts.. AND THATS SAYING SOMETHING..

Re: I´m not surprised

The second semi-final has the same number of bad songs, and far fewer good ones.

First Switzerland, now Slovenia! You're killing me!

As for Azerbaijan, it probably will make it through even without the diaspora vote for the same reason Lourdi won two years ago. The song itself is good (despite the fact that I still don't believe they're singing in English). It's different from any other song in the contest, with the possible exception of Finland's entry. And, to top it off, they have an interesting presentation (just like Lourdi did).

Azerbaijan - Ask the Question

I'm in Baku - I'll not be watching the Semi fianls as they start at midnight here. With work the next day, there is no way I'll be awake until 2:30am to vote and see who qualifies.

Guys do me a favour if you can - ask at the press conference if the voting figures for each nation including the Ex soviet bloc will be made available before the finals. I bet you $100 they will not. And ask if they woill be published on the internet.

Just think how many Azeri's and Russians in BST +4hr time block will vote? My answer is...................not many.

Re: Azerbaijan - Ask the Question

Indeed Azerbaijan may not have a huge diaspora (I don't know if it has or not), but that hardly matters. BECAUSE, with Turkey in the other semifinal, it is very likely that the Turkish diaspora (well known for being huge and very supportive of the home entry regardless of the quality of the song) not being able to vote for Turkey this time, will vote for Azerbaijan for cultural-religious identification. Thus, this will almost for sure mean: 12 points from Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. That makes for a 36-point-advance. Then Azerbaijan will only have to count on the solidarity from the Soviet block, and they'll get that support, because debutant countries always have had that support. Thus, imagining there's more 10 points from Russia, Armenia and Moldova, Azerbaijan will have by then 66 points and will have qualified.

The comparison between this song and Lordi is absolutely bollocks! Lordi was a good pop song, and this one is pure noise.

Re: Azerbaijan - Ask the Question

I'm wondering if each country will have the cajones to show each others songs live as they are technically still at war with each other! Armenia occupies 17-20% of Azerbaijani territory. Hence the interest in the voting figures. They have to be announced before the final. Will the guys ask at the press conference?

Re: Azerbaijan - Ask the Question

Good question. I wish it was made public, somehow I fear foul play with the televoting...

Re: Azerbaijan - Ask the Question

They don't release the semi-final votes before the final so as not to prejudice voters in the final.

Re: Azerbaijan - Ask the Question

yeah I thought as much. So much for openess. The sooner this competition gets back to Jury voting for SONGS rather than performances the better. See you in Moscow or St Petersburg next year. I'm sure of it. It's a fix.
