Update on the bookmakers qualifying rankings

Posted on 2008.05.20 at 12:16
Current Mood: okay

Once again, I'm using the "implied probability" of each country qualifying based on the odds on www.oddschecker.co.uk. These should not be confused with the odds to win the contest.

5 certain qualifiers
Russia 99% (was 98% last week)
Armenia 98% (96%)
Greece 94% (90%)
Bosnia-Herz. 84% (78%)
Romania 83% (78%)

5 most likely to join them
Israel 64% (60%)
Azerbaijan 64% (58%)
Norway 64% (55%)
Ireland 60% (69%)
Slovenia 55% (60%)

2 knocking on the door
Poland 48% (44%)
Finland 45% (50%)

The rest
Belgium 39% (34%)
Netherlands 36% (27%)
Andorra 35% (55%)
Moldova 34% (40%)
San Marino 30% (20%)
Montenegro 29% (33%)
Estonia 28% (44%)

While Ireland remains inside the Top 10, we've now fallen behind Israel, Azerbaijan and Norway. Meanwhile Netherlands continues to gain ground and Andorra has fallen like a stone.

I think they're pretty much on the money there with the top 12, just not in that order. I think Dustin's just gonna miss out unfortunately.

The Judges

I know I left this in the previous posting but I want it to get answer :) Thanks.

Will the full list of the jury picks be revealed at some point or another? or will we be guessing what their full rankings were?

By the way, my predictions for the first semi-final:

1.Russia
2.Greece (though it should be first)
3.Armenia
4.Bosnia & Herzegovina
5.Israel
6.Norway
7.Romania
8.Belgium
9.Slovenia or Azerbaijan
10.Poland for the jury vote

(Netherlands should be in it but it probably won't be)

Re: The Judges

Oh Romania will be MUCH higher than that. It might even score higher than Russia.

I would love to see Ireland make it Good for the contest
The Netherlandse have to make it too. It is a much better entry than Armenian one that precedes it

Propbale top 10 for first semi final

1 Russia by a mile
2 Romania
3 Greece
4 Armenia
5 Montenegro
6 Belgium
7 Azerbeijan
8 Poland
9 Netherlands
10 Israel I hope or Estonia

I think this might be the ream finnishline or close to it taking into account the countries that can vote on that night and the fact that the jury actually chooses one song to go to the finals

Belgium

Keith,

My friend I know you are very negative about Belgium, but I really have an odd feeling that Belgium will be the surprise of the contest. I bet they will be top 5 in the final.

Sorry I put this in the wrong thread - so if you read this twice.......

For what it's worth and in no particlar order the song that will qualify tonight because of the voting rather than the song: Greece, Estonia, Amrenia, Finland, Russia, Norway, Netherlands, Romania, and Israel.

The songs that should qualify: Slovenia, San Marino, Belgium, Armenia, Romania, Netherlands, Poland. The rest are so poor they shouldn't even be in the final. God help the Jury!

I'm not even going to watch, I'm so bored by the whole thing. I just hope the rumours are true and Wogan and the BBC pull out, the French and Spanish too. The thing is so fixed in Russia's favor. Let them pay for the EBU.

Ireland's Odds

Ireland's odds to win the competition have increased significantly in Paddy Power as of this morning - were at 8-1 yesterday but now 14-1. PP spes obviously following this blog; AKoE boys should demand commission!

thats interesting because according to this (http://odds.bestbetting.com/specials/eurovision/winning-nation) Ukraine and Sweden are up there as favourites to win, so they should be right up there with the qualifiers. actually... ukraine rates a mention on odds checker... see http://www.oddschecker.com/specials/eurovision

also oddschecker is rubbish because I have looked at the australian rules football odds for who will finish last and my team the Fremantle dockers, who are currently 3rd from the bottom, are fourth favourite to finish last... despite the fact they are known chockers at easy games, and they lost to melbourne, and the the worst final quarter team in the league and they sucked arse the last 3 weeks... in fact the only good game they have had is the only game (out of 8) they have won this season... and thankfully that was the game against the west coke (coast) eagles.

Jury vote = Quality? Don't make me laugh

It really makes me laugh to see so many people expecting the juries to vote for a quality song rather than an audience's favourite. I really don't think so. In fact, I think all the things that "we" have rallied against (neigbour voting, diaspora, picking spectacle rather than quality) apply to the juries as well. Maybe even more, as we obviously have no idea what goes on in the juries' rooms all over Europe tonight. Maybe secret hotlines with other juries, who knows.

I am surprised you changed from http://bestbetting.com/ last time to oddschecker. Bestbetting often has much more favorable (to the punter) odds, and many of the odds on oddschecker (even though the page updates frequently) have changed when I actually click through to the site.

Also, for some reason oddschecker doesn't have the VC Bet odds to qualify (again much better odds). For example:

Sweden - Bet365 1/14, VC Bet 2/7
Turkey - Bet365 1/8, VC Bet 2/9
Ireland - Bet365 2/5, VC Bet 8/13
Poland - Bet365 2/3, VC Bet 1/1
Israel - Bet365 6/5, VC Bet 13/8 (where do you get Israel at 64% anyway with all odds I have seen against them qualifying, they should obviously have a percentage less than fifty?)

VC Bet on bestbetting also shows odds both ways (allowing bets against qualification, and making it easier to remove the spead from the percentages).

I have recalculated the percentages, using the longest odds from both sites (and subtracting 4% from each one to account for the spread). I think this gives better results.

01 93.6 Russia
02 91.2 Armenia
03 88.3 Greece
04 79.3 Bosnia and Herzegovina
05 77.8 Romania
06 58.5 Norway
07 57.9 Azerbaijan
07 57.9 Ireland
09 53.9 Slovenia
10 46.0 Poland
11 40.4 Finland
12 34.1 Israel
12 34.1 Belgium
12 34.1 Andorra
15 32.4 Moldova
16 29.3 Netherlands
17 26.8 Estonia
18 24.6 Montenegro
19 22.7 San Marino

My figures add up to 983% (much better than yours which add up to 1089%, if you want to try to estimate percentages from the odds).

if you pay attention

to the bookies and have that as a criteria for countries chances then you would be amazed by the results..or do i have to remind you last years odds and results?
(Anonymous) at 2008-05-20 13:08 (UTC) (Link)

Re: if you pay attention

Yes you do need to remind us. I don't recall anything unusual happening.
Serbia had the favorite in the semi-final, and won that. The top two favorites in the final (Ukraine and Serbia) finished in the top two spots.

No "longshot" has won since 2002. Maybe THE favorite didn't always win, but the winner has come from the top four or five in recent years.
